Here’s what you should know about Canada’s ‘THC breathalyzer’

We begin this post with a slight correction. The term “THC breathalyzer” is a bit of a misnomer. There are no devices being used in an official capacity in Canada that measure the amount of THC your body based on a breath sample, so it’s inaccurate to call such a thing a breathalyzer.

Nonetheless, the term has stuck. Perhaps because it’s an easy way to describe the device police will be using to marijuana-impaired by associating it with its alcohol equivalent.

Cannabis Use Rising Among Older Canadians

There is a lot of accepted wisdom when it comes to cannabis, or marijuana myths, as we like to call them. One of the prevailing stereotypes about marijuana is that is only used by young people. Think about weed and you might picture a gaggle of teens huddled behind a 7-11 passing a joint around.

Today, as marijuana goes mainstream, these myths are being challenged. According to the latest government statistics, cannabis use is most common among 25 to 34-year-olds with 26 per cent saying they tried it at least once in the last three months. What may surprise you, however, is how prevalent cannabis use is among older age groups. The data also shows 16 per cent of 35 to 44-year-olds, 8.5 per cent of 45 to 64 year-olds and 4 per cent of over-65s said they had consumed cannabis in the last three months.
